How to fix a broken Tomato Cage without Tools

Most tomato cages are flimsy and cheaply made.

Oftentimes, they break after one season. Here are

a couple ways to fix your cages for just a few pennies.

This first way is an easy fix and it costs almost

nothing. The best part is, chances are you already

have this stuff at laying around. All you need are

a couple zip ties and a wire hanger

There are 2 ways that tomato cages typically break,
at the weld where the ring meets the leg, and at the
weld where the ring is joined. Depending how damaged
the cage actually is, it might just be better to
just buy a new one.

For a cage damaged where the ring meets the leg,

simply put a zip tie diagonally across both the

ring and the leg, bringing them together. For extra

support you can add another zip tie diagonally going

the other way. That’s it. How easy is that!

Zip ties are weather proof and will last at least

a couple seasons.

For a cage damaged where the ring is joined, you’ll

need a wire hanger. I picked up a pack of 5 of these

for $buck at the 99 cent store.

First unravel the hanger. Put one of the bent points

right up to the nearest intersection.  Bend the hanger

tightly around diagonally 3 times, one, two, three.

Cut the excess off with a wire hanger

Then bend the hanger in the shape of the ring and do
the same to the other side.  For added support you could
add a zip tie on each of the broken parts of the ring.

And that’s it. Hope this helps.

How to make a Baby Yoda Planter

How to make a Baby Yoda Planter

In this Blog, we show you how you can make a planter that looks like Baby Yoda using common items.  This is a fun project and makes a great gift for any Baby Yoda fans.  In this post you’ll find more information on the items used and some tips and tricks we couldn’t fit into the video.  If you’re actually considering making one, I suggest reading this whole post.

Here are the items you need to make a Baby Yoda Planter:

You’ll need 3 rimless terracotta pots, a saucer, 4 mini pots, a block of floral foam, white glue, pen, a sharpie, some twine, a knife, paint and a hot glue gun .  You can also use burlap and the stencil but these are optional.

Stencil:

Read first: The stencil will work flawlessly only if you use the same size/shape pots we used in this video.  It can work on similar size/shape pots but you might not work perfectly if your pots are significantly different.

Large pots - https://thd.co/3kZHIwk - Bought ours at Home Depot but I’ve seen them at Lowes.

Small pots - https://amzn.to/33gxKkg - found ours at Michaels but I’ve also seen them at Lowes and Home depot.

Floral Foam: https://amzn.to/362OBZq

Burlap - We got ours at Walmart for $5.  The cheapest one we could find on Amazon was like $17. For this project we needed one at least 48” x 18”

Paint:

Sage Green (brand: craft smart) - https://bit.ly/3mjlyXz

Khaki (fbrand: apple barrel) - found at Walmart  https://amzn.to/3qd675w

Coral Reef (brand: craft smart) - https://bit.ly/3mjlyXz

How to Make a Baby Yoda Planter

Start off by cutting out all the stencils, we’ll need these later.  Then paint one big pot, and two small pots green.

While these pots are drying, let’s make the ears. Use a pen to trace the ear stencil onto the floral foam then cut it out. Cut the ear in half to make 2 perfectly symmetrical ears. This is optional but I like to shave off the edges to give them a more natural rounded look.

Now we need to paint the ears, but since the floral foam is very porous, we need to seal them before we paint so that the foam doesn’t absorb all the paint.  We’re using white school glue to seal these. Just brush the first coat on and let it dry, then apply a second coat.

Once the ears are sealed dry, paint them green.  After the paint dries, use a pen to trace inner ear stencil onto the ear. Paint the inside of the lines you just traced, pink, and let it dry.

Now that the ears are done, let’s do the face. Use a pen to trace each stencil onto the face. There are directions on how to use this stencil, on the stencil itself.  Once the face is traced, go over it with a sharpie.

You can consider the face finished with just the sharpie because it already looks great.  But we’re gonna paint the eyes with high gloss black because we really want the eyes to pop out. Once that dries, paint the reflections in his eyes and the corners white.

Ok now that his face is done, let’s attach the ears.  We’re gonna put the ears on opposite sides of the pot.  But as you can see the pot is curved so it doesn’t make great contact with the ear, so use your knife to cut a very slight V on the unpainted side. This is gonna allow much better contact to the pot.  Now glue the ears on.

Alright, now let’s assemble the pots.  Put one pot up-side-down and another pot on top.  You’ll notice that these pots never line up perfectly which causes them to wobble. So put some hot glue on the inside rim of the pot on top to keep this guy nice and sturdy.

Now let’s assemble the arms. Cut off about 16 inches of twine.  Hold it up to the stencil and mark the twine in the spots where we’re gonna tie our knots. Tie a knot on the first mark.  Slide the little green pot on and tie the next knot at the next mark.  Now slide an unpainted small pot on. You may need to double knot these depending on how thin your twine is.  Now slide the other unpainted pot on the opposite way and make a knot at the second to last mark.  Lastly, slide the green pot on as far as it can go and make another knot at the last mark. This knot is at a difficult angle so do your best.

Now the arms are finished.  Center this on top of the stacked pots and use hot glue to secure it. Now put hot glue on top all around the base and center your saucer on top. The saucer here has two functions… First and foremost, it’s going to catch any water that leaks out from the planter if it accidentally gets overwatered.  The other is an aesthetic benefit, it broadens the shoulders and helps support baby yoda’s coat.

Speaking of the coat, it’s up to you how you want to proceed at this point.   We’re going to make a coat for Baby Yoda but you don’t have to.  If you’re going to put this outside where it’ll be exposed to all the elements like rain and sun, I suggest not putting a coat on it.  You can just paint all the pots Khaki color and call it finished. And it still looks great. But I really want to make a coat.  It’s going to finish it off and give Baby Yoda that iconic look.

Start by cutting a piece of burlap 48in wide by 18in tall and fold it in half so the dimensions are roughly 24 by 18 inches. Then fold over an inch and a half fold at the top rim 3 times on the 18 inch side, and hot glue it down.

On the right side under the fold, cut it one inch in.  Fold a one inch flap over then glue it down. Wrap it around the saucer  and overlap it a couple inches. Hot glue the seam together.  Right below the rim of the saucer on each side, cut a three inch vertical slit so that we can poke the arms through.

Now let’s make the sleeves. Cut a 8 in by 24 inch piece of burlap and fold it in half. To make the cuff, fold over one inch 3 times from this and glue it down. Wrap this around the arm and hot glue it together. Cut off any extra. And do the same to the other side.

Last but not least, use some extra burlap to fold and fill up the gap between the coat and the pot.

If you’re gonna put him outside in direct sunlight, spray the pots with a clear coat of polyurethane gloss finish and it’ll last for years.
